Post-processing

Since Varjo display technology works by layering two displays per eye (the peripheral area and focus area), certain post-processing effects can create unwelcome visual artifacts in your application. This will typically be most noticeable in the focus display area. With the XR-3 and VR-3 headsets this can also cause discoloring in the foveated area, which can be distracting for the viewer as it will follow their gaze.
As a general guideline, we recommend the following settings for commonly used post-processing effects.
Compatible with Varjo applications
- White balance
- Channel mixer
- Colour adjustments
- Color curves
- Lift, Gamma, Gain
- Shadows, Midtones, Highlights
- Split toning
- Fixed exposure
Not recommended for Varjo applications
- Automatic/dynamic exposure
- Bloom
- Vignette
- Chromatic aberration
- Film grain
- Depth of Field
- Lens distortion
- Motion blur
- Panini projection
- Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
- Screen Space reflection
Shaders
Shaders and effects that use screen space or per-pixel information can also create similar artifacts, and should generally be avoided. In cases where they are necessary, test the shaders and effects inside the headset to see the resulting image.
Incompatible post-processing and screen effects can cause discoloration in the focus area or the foveated area. This may include these areas looking blown out, darkened, or having visual noise.
